This is where address verification comes in.

That’s a huge drag on company profitability. As many as 4.7 of packages have to be reshipped because of shipping errors, and this can cost a business as much as 35-70 FOR EACH ONE. Is there anything else I should do? How much longer should I wait before cutting open the tape and plastic wrap to look inside or just going dump the box at someplace that takes donations? What happens if I get rid of it and UPS comes looking - do I have any responsibility or liability for it? If they aren't going to pick it up - is there a way to indicate that the "case is closed" and cancel the return to sender in their system? I'm just trying to do the right thing here. It’s more common than you might think for people to make typos in their mailing addresses. Customer service declined to give me a date or schedule a time to pick up the package, and as far as I can tell - nobody has come looking for it. Weather isn't looking great next week and nobody will be around most of the day to give access to the package IF UPS shows up. If I leave this package outside in the weather the cardboard box and contents are going to get ruined, and possibly stolen. The tracking number still shows return to sender when I pull it up online. We have never dealt with the sender, so our address shouldn't be in their system at all, it looks like a UPS shipping mistake. (They had promised it would be picked up last week, and then by Tuesday of this week, and not it's Thursday and this thing is still sitting in my garage. I've contacted UPS and requested return to sender, but nobody has come out to pick it up for a week now. I've contacted the company the sold/shipped the item and they did find the tracking number in their system and tied it to a recent order, but wouldn't tell me anything else. I'm unable to see any addresses on the tracking site.
UPS PACKAGE DELIVERED TO MYADDRESS BY MISTAKE CODE
The other package in the pair shows delivered to a different zip code than mine on a different day. When checking the tracking number on the UPS site it appears that it is part of a multiple package shipment. I haven't opened/unwrapped the sealed box to look for other information. The box arrived with the shippers packing list already removed from the outside of the box - one of those tear-off types that leaves the outline on the box. There are multiple stickers with my address and tracking number on it. The box has our address on it, but not our name.

It's over 100lbs and the contents are apparently worth about $500. I accepted it because I thought it might have been something my wife ordered, but once she got home she confirmed it wasn't ours. UPS showed up with a large package the other day that we didn't order.
